While firefighters have taken on special significance in a post-9/11 world, Wendy began painting these brave men and women in 2000. She drew her inspiration from her older son, who risked everything to serve as a firefighter with the Westfield Fire Department. Her firefighters are drawn boldly, yet convey surprising gentleness.
Wendy, like all Americans, was deeply touched by the events of 9/11. Desperate for a way to help, she sent prints of her paintings, signed by the crews at local fire departments, to each of the fire houses who lost a firefighter that day.
